ARTIE SHAW. Scarce vintage 5x7 matte finish sepia tone chest-up portrait, circa 1940, of the legendary jazz figure, seen in the days before he soured on the music industry, boldly signed in blue fountain pen, "Sincerely -/Artie Shaw." Fine condition, with a noticeable semi-circular bend in the background, intersecting his first name, very slightly detracting from the overall appearance of the image. An introspective perfectionist and self-described "very difficult man," Artie Shaw was one of the top clarinetists of the Big Band era. In 1954 he walked away from his career, fed up with the demands and compromises of the commercial music business.
