ALINE MacMAHON. Vintage 7.5 x 9.75 glossy black and white half-length portrait from Dragon Seed (1944), her Oscar-nominated performance, boldly inscribed in blue fountain pen, "With best wishes/to Charles Stumpf/Aline MacMahon." Fine condition, with partially trimmed borders and a light bend in the bottom right corner, not substantially detracting from the overall appearance of the image. Making her Broadway debut in 1921, Aline MacMahon was an established theatrical performer when she was signed by Warner Bros. in 1931. The studio promoted her heavily, but her rather melancholy looks perhaps mitigated against her achieving leading lady status. By the mid-1930s, with over two dozen films already behind her, she began playing character roles. She continued appearing in films, televison and onstage until her retirement in 1975. Signed photographs are relatively uncommon.
