Abner Doubleday
ABNER DOUBLEDAY. Major General in the Union Army, credited with aiming the first cannon to fire on Fort Sumter in the opening salvo of the Civil War. Baseball lore also credits Doubleday, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, with inventing the game in a field in Cooperstown in 1839. Scarce ANS, 1 p., 8vo, New Jersey, Oct. 24, '87. In full: "You are welcome to my/autograph but I have no time/to write a war incident for/you./Yours truly/Abner Doubleday/Major General/U.S.Army," and further addressed to Saml. A. Christie in Doubleday's hand. Matted and framed with a portrait. Fine condition, with two mailing folds and mat burn around the edges.
