Sholom Aleichem
SHOLOM ALEICHEM. Scarce ALS, 1 p., 16vo., in Russian, Warsaw, January 26, 1905. The beloved chronicler of Jewish life in the East European diaspora writes to his friend, Dr. Levin, in St. Petersburg, playfully chiding Levin for allowing his almost daily letters to his daughter to go unanswered. In part: "Do you know a certain Mademoiselle Ernestina Solomonovna who lives in St. Petersburg? She lives with Levin's family on Panteleimonovaskaya, 13... The girl is a swine. Her father writes a letter to her every day, but she never answers him... I can't understand why people eat every day but only write once a month. Let her eat daily, but have her write more often. It seems at least I have the right to expect that from Ernestina Solomonovna. Do I have the right, or do I not? I am her father, am I not? Please tell me if I am her father or not." Addressed on the verso in the author's hand. Fine condition, remarkably clean and well cared for over time. A generous helping of Jewish guilt, served up by a master!
