SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH. Ameircan cleric and poet. Desirable handwritten and signed copy of the first stanza of his poem, "America," on a 4.75x3 card, which he also dates 1884. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Smith's hand, and by a separate postcard to the original recipient of the quote, Mr. W. P. Hopkins, in which Smith notes, "1832 is the date of the writing of 'My country.' The date of my birth is Oct. 21, 1808. S.F.S." The postcard is dated Jan. 16, 1885. Mailing envelope shows some light foxing; the other two pieces are in very fine condition.
