Herman Melville
HERMAN MELVILLE. Scarce, bold signature, "Herman Melville/Arrowhead, 1872," on heavy stock, 8x5. Laid down beneath Melville's signature is that of Mary A. Lathbury, an author associated with the Chautauqua movement, and on the verso are signatures and handwritten quotes of Isabel Somerset and Frances Willard, national leaders of the temperance movement in the U.S. and Britain. To the right of Melville's signature is a lengthy surface abrasion, and glue remnants run the length of the right edge of the paper. Both defects are well away from the Melville autograph and could easily be matted out.
